Good on ya Dan!

Thanks for sharing that. It looks like a nice piece of gear.

We're having a crazy hot spring down here in Australia, looks like your freezing. Lucky it didn't stop the delivery man!

Enjoy your new toy! and great idea with the external reverb.

Cheers

thanks for taking the time to post the video I enjoyed watching the whole process.
I like looking at how others set up gear and their fader groupings.  Just curious...why do you put the back of the 32R facing the front
of the rack ?

Enjoy !

dpdan...

Congrats on the DL32 acquisition. NICE! I am kinda envious. But my personal banker (you know who) and practicality say "uh uh, don't even think about it!" Oh well maybe in another time and dimension.  ;)

Anyway, have lots of good gigs with it.  :thu:

Hi Rdmitch and Keyboard Magic,
a few reasons for the confusion about the DL32R facing the wrong way in the rack...

It is actually mounted correctly into the front of the rack with the Furman AC light unit.
When I set up sound using the DL32R, it sits on top of an amp rack so I don't have to bend down to the floor to patch inputs and outputs. This puts the front of the 32R facing the same way as the front of the power amplifiers.
I always want to see the front of the DL32R for patching in stage "sub" snakes, mic lines etc.

Keyboard Magic, thank you!
I do not want to use the built-in reverb/s on the Mackie because they sound absolutely horrible to me.
While the built-in reverb is "singing" in a song, the reverb does not actually sound terrible in context, but for acoustic, jazz and classical stuff, the reverb "tail" is heard and is naked all by itself during open passages of music, and at the end of cutoffs. Like any artificial reverb that is used, it has to sound nice. For this reason, I decided to put this inexpensive TC Electronics M-One reverb in the back of the case with the DL32R because it can fit above the skinny part of the 32R.

So, I need the two wireless receivers, but almost never need to actually see or adjust anything on them. Same goes for the TC Electronics effects unit. The Sennheiser wireless receivers and the TC just sits in the back facing the wall. So cool that Mackie made the shape of this thing to not waste a ton of space inside the rack so we can put the router, hard drive and in fact (other gear) and have it all fit inside a four space case.  How cool is that?

Thanks for watching my goofy little video.  :thu:

keyboard magic,

the sound quality of the reverb in the 32R has NOT been improved over the DL1608.
In fact, there is no difference in the variety of choices between Hall, Plate, Room etc. it is all the same thing just different pictures.
In this regard, Mackie has really dropped the ball compared to so many other digital mixers I have used and heard. Presonus, Allen & Heath, and even Yamaha have acceptable sounding built-in reverbs.
I really hate talking negatively about the DL32R but so far, this is the only thing I can see really wrong with it. I mean, an Allen & Heath Mixwizard has nice sounding reverb. Two of them in fact.
My DL reverb rant is now complete.  :-\

Thanks guys!

What happens when wi if goes down? There is no way to hardwire iPad to unit. I have mixed with the DL for over 200 shows and on some of them wifi has gone down or been intermittent.

Hi jib,
for me, if the Wi-Fi router goes dead and does not come back on due to catastrophic failure (burns up or just quits indefinitely), I get out my back-up router that is already recognized by the i-devices and already recognized password.
I wait till a break and connect the back-up router. A brand new Apple Airport Express is $90.00 USD delivered... something we should always have just in case... and I do.

Backup router is all fine and dandy, I carry 2 extra. Some places wifi does not work due to interference etc.. Who knows? What then? Ya I can always bring my Pro 1 as a backup

Try within 100' of a large communication tower and see what happens. Some hotels I work are so jammed up with signal it's impossible to run a show wirelessly.

You are welcome. I've never used the reverb on the DL once. Never had the occasion to use it, especially in school gyms . Uggghhhh. The only digital / software verb I ever use is in audio recording/ remastering. I use the verb in Izotope Ozone 5. And it's not too shabby.

It is a shame that with new hardware/software/firmware they couldn't tweak or create new reverbs. I don't know how hard it would be, but it should be possible in that price range. But I think the DL32 overall is gonna be absolutely amazing to use just the same. I've always liked Mackie stuff.  :)

Even though I'm paying ,its great getting "presents" or "new toys" as my wife call them :)
I've often used the "Ive had that for ages" when she discovers a new bit of equipment - as if that made it ok

TBH when I use that quote it's being taken with a pinch of salt.
It's a ritual now, not much slips past her.
And that's the truth Wynnd ;)

Dan, thanks for sharing the video.
I'm guilty of running outside to the truck as well. As I write this, I'm laughing. As a kid, it was the sound of the music coming from the ice cream truck that made me run out to the street. Now it's the sound of air brakes and a diesel engine idling out front.
One last thing: When the mixer arrived, I was in such a hurry to get it out of the box and start playing with it, that I overlooked something until a friend pointed it out to me. It's nothing earth shattering, but sometimes it's the little things that put a smile on my face. On the bottom right hand corner of the front of the box, there's a Mackie bumper sticker. As I said, nothing earth shattering, but as a proud owner of several Mackie products, I couldn't wait to peel it off and affix it to the rear glass of my Ford Escape.

I received my DL32R yesterday. I can't get any sound out of it. I can connect to my ipad just fine, signal coming in, signal showing in main out, but no sound. I checked routing & everything looks fine. Anyone have any ideas? Anyone else have an issue getting setup?

Sorry to hear that Dan.   Before I insult you by accident, I'd like to know what you've been using in the past.  (Model and manufacturer)   This would be a huge leap if you have no background in sound.  (Something that you can work past.)   I'd also like to know what outputs you're using and into what device they are going.  And have you hooked up headphones yet?

Mackie's help desk has been getting rave reviews since the DL32R's release.  Consider calling them too.

Will check back after a few hours.

Happy New Year. The only thing standing in the way from the meter is I/O patch. If it's the default you should have a signal out unless the DAC or driver took a dump. So check your I/O patch matrix and make sure that main LR out is patched to the right connector (XLR) that you have speakers on.

I didn't know you could re-route the output with the patch panel.  Interesting!  (Not sure I would ever do that.)

My very first experience with a Mackie CFX-12 was 15 minutes of NOTHING.  I finally broke down and started reading the manual.  On that mixer all channels have to go to a group and the group goes to the main outs.  Quirky but exactly the way it was designed.

Wynnd the I/O patch on the 1608 is pretty anemic. You only can send different sources to the two iPad channels.

@Dean3
Standart L/R out put should be 13-14 , there is a mute on the Main channel (who wants to mute L/R ?)
If the cannel you are using is in a Group/VCA group the Group/VCA fader should be up and unmuted

I mute L/R when I'm setting up monitors, though it's just as easy to pull the fader down.

I mute the L/R anytime I'm turning on phantom power!!!!!!!    I really hate that pop.  My guitarist has a phantom powered DI for her acoustic sound into the PA.  (Which sounds quite nice.)

Thanks you all for the posts. While I am not a pro sound engineer, I have had my hands in sound gear for 30+ years, so at least I am not a newbie. Setup  is iPod plugged into 25 /26 with no sub group or vca. Coming out of 13 & 14 to a crown power amp and into my passive EV's. I did finally get sound, but it's nasty. It is acting like there is a gate on it. I have checked both channels and the gates are off, comps are off, no effects, no eq. I can see the levels on the channels and on the main. I don't get any sound out unless I turn it way up, and then it is distorted. So in short it sounds like my level in is way to hot, but as far as I can tell that is not the case. I also have nothing at the headphone jack. I also tried just plugging a mic in and I get the same distorted sound. I have not changed any of the routing and that is still showing main outs at # 13 & 14.... Mackies phone support has been closed since Christmas Eve. I think they open tomorrow, but I will be at work...

That's a real bummer. I am sure Mackie will get it sorted out for you. But it is disappointing that this should happen. It should be a no questions asked replacement.

I hope it happens quickly!

If you had an external signal source such as a Pink Stick or equivalent it would be straight forward to localize the problem. It does sound like a return. A single frequency source at 1K or 400 hz would be useful even a recorded one on the iPad. Now and in the future.

30 years, might not be a pro, but you're probably not doing anything wrong.  It sounds to me like a bad unit.  Definitely call Mackie's support, but I'm guessing a replacement will be at your home before the end of next week.  When they had to swap out my DL1608, they sent the replacement and I had 10 days to pack up the defective unit and ship it back.  (Bad connector.)  I was out of a mixer for about an hour.  Your situation doesn't sound as good.  (And it also sounds like the first bad unit we've heard about.  Mackie will want this fixed quickly.)

I got in touch with Mackie last night. It is indeed a bad unit. They are overnighting a replacement out on Monday. Less than a minute wait time on the phone after being closed since Christmas Eve. They are as anxious as I am to get this resolved and really couldn't have done more.
