Title: FAQ: Bolted Down iPad Startup Sequence
Post by: RoadRanger on December 13, 2014, 04:53:45 PM
So, what sequence of powering up the DL, router, and bolted down iPad works?

I do know that the router has to be fully booted before you turn on the DL.  Question is should the iPad be off, in standby, or on when the DL is powered up?  Really sux when your bolted down iPad doesn't "see" the DL :( .

I undock before starting the DL but if I had the iPad bolted down I'd start with the iPad off as opposed to sleeping as I reckon the iPad takes longer to boot that the DL.

Thought I'd copy this over?

It's been a few days since I used it last, but usually for me..

Power up Router (AirPort Express) - always wait for it to settle down (green LED steady)
Power up DL, which powers up the docked iPad. (usually powered off)
Load MF on docked iPad - wait for it to sync (or sink?) Always has.
Et Voila.

Then I connect the wireless iPad (always check to see if it sees the AirPort) and load MF.  I have to tell it to connect to the DL by going into the Device Page and select the available device.

The bottom line on all this is that there shouldn't be any sequence of power on etc. if you follow 20+ years of experience open to anyone that knows how to code and deal with TCP/IP. Clearly Mackie has no such knowledge.

You're right WK (of course) but we all know that many computing/network devices are temperamental regarding switch on sequence, my new X32 for one, but it's not just mixing desks......

I would have loved to tell the General and others that when I'm aiming a missile loaded with Merv's that I might be off a bit and instead of Moscow I hit Melbourne instead. :) Yes I was involved in guidance systems a while back.

4,3,2,1 oh sh...t I know its not the same but if you want to play with the big boys then you need to measure up. Since you own both the X32 and the Dl1608 like I, can you really compare the two?

I had my stay at a Semi-con co. and the communications protocol is called SECS. Advanced technology on an age old profession.

I do know that the router has to be fully booted before you turn on the DL.

Now that we have the option of fixed IP address on the DL, I no longer have to do that. I set it to 192.168.0.128 like all my other mixers. Start everything up together. The mixer's ready before the router, but my iPads no longer care. They work as soon as the router's hot.

Where do you do that, I can't find it :( ?

Haven't read the manual yet. Setup|Devices|Wired|click the "i". I think. Not looking at it right now.

That lets you connect to a fixed IP DL but I don't see how it sets the DL to a fixed IP ?

EDIT> Well, I RTFM and saw the "I" option which I guess doesn't exist unless you are connected to a DL (makes sense). I'll switch static IP on for sure - one less reason for the DL have a problem at a show :thu: . That won't affect the docked iPad not connecting issue but sounds like if I start with the iPad powered down when I switch on the DL I'll be good 8) .

Manuals are for a reason, something to consult with when you get stuck!

By the way, I've taken to firing up my mixer in this order.  Ipad, Master Fader, DL1608, Ipad-mini.  That works pretty well for me.  And I default to the mixer initially for show.  After everything is up and running, then I will change shows if I need a different one.  It doesn't seem to like syncing to a different show first.  Might just be a quirk.
