Post by: RoadRanger on March 17, 2015, 09:34:48 PM
Turns out there is a WiFi scanner for iOS available!
1. Download the "AirPort Utility" app via the Appstore.
2. Go to the "Settings" app and open the settings for "Airport Utility" in the looooong list on the left.
3. Turn "Wi-Fi Scanner" on.
4. Open the "Airport Utility" app.
5. Tap "Wi-Fi Scan" (upper right) and then "Scan".
6. Wait 10 seconds or so.
7. ... and Bob's your uncle :) !

It lets you know what channels are already in use.  Particularly useful when running your WiFi in the 2.4 Ghz band.
There are only 11 channels available down there.  (But those are the ones with the longest reach.)

There's actually only 3 usable channels (1, 6, 11) as the WiFi signal is 4 channels wide :( .

easy to think that way, but someone will start applying sidebands to those and start cutting them up.   (Well, I expect that.)   And in Radio, there is a center strong and dropping signal strength off to both sides.  So, there actually are 11 channels, and in the right circumstances, most will be useable.  Treating them as only have three channels available, reduces interference until you have multiple sources using the same channels because they also think that only 3 channels are useable.  At my Piano Teacher's house, there were about 12 nearby WiFi networks in easy range of my laptop.  (ipads don't seem as sensitive.)   At my home, I only see my own networks. (I use istumbler.)
