Title: Excel P-Bass copy... great value!
Post by: monthlymixcd on April 12, 2010, 07:05:02 PM
First off, excuse the fact that I'm giddy that I got such a stellar deal on this bass (posted by Ikdog on HCv1 Classifieds before it died and he actually turned out to be in my town so I got the cash-in-hand discount price... thanks Tony!) ... but anyone that is looking for a well-built P-bass clone should check out the Excel basses. You can get 'em for well under $200 online and although the tuners are spaced a little farther apart and the headstock is a little longer and really lacking enough meat in the right places to allow it to be reshaped into a Fender-esque profile (save maybe a Tele bass shape)... for build quality and playability it beats most of the Stagg, SX, and Squier fare hands down and could even make the MIM Fenders nervous.

I was just looking for a platform to start from for adding the Rio Grande P pickup and BadassII bridge I had lying around and after playing it with the stock bridge and pickup for 3 days I have to say that I'm not sure it'd be worth the swap. It sounds good and sustains really well and about the only mods I'm considering ATM are a BWB pickguard to match my '75 RI J bass and maybe a set of flatwounds. Even the sunburst is nice and is only diminished by a few odd grain swirls in the wood underneath. A nice bass all-around. Recommended!

I'm glad (or comforted) to see the first post in the instrument section... is in the BASS section!

Well, everybody knows it is the "One True Instrument (tm)" :thu: Back when the "Dudepit" was active they had a forum just for inexpensive basses that was pretty good. That Excel bass looks like it might not be much work to "stealth" - that logo looks kinda big in the photo? And yah, think more about it before changing anything - those guys over on TB would be much better players if they practiced instead of spending their time modifying perfectly good axes and jabber jawing about it on TB ;).

Agreed... on all counts.

The logo IS that big BTW. The headstock is 9" from the fretboad to the end... .5" more than my J bass. I have a Tele bass headstock profile done up as an overlay and think I could pull that off although the round bit at the end would be slightly smaller than it should be since the cutaway on the Excel is so severe. If I did that and shot the neck with some nitro this bass would stealth pretty well, yeah.

I'm with you that I'd rather spend more time playing it than modding it.

You must be talking about 'Tim's HoBags' forum from the Pit.  Gawd, I miss that place.   :thu:

Aww, garsh, 't'weren't nuttin...

Yah, I guess Dave is either getting a bit long-in-the-tooth or got fed up with trying to admin the site.  I know they went thru a big change a few years ago and, since then, things just haven't been the same.

Life is change, I guess.  Seems like change is all I get, at any rate.  Others seem to get the foldin' money.

Anyway, thanx for the status.  I like the digs here - guess I'll hang around!   :thu:

Don't bother - I just checked it out. You can't even read the forum without registering and there are like 1 post every few months . The forum software over there makes HC 2.0 look good :o.
