Title: NEED URGENT HELP! Force update via wifi DL1608 (resolved)
Post by: musicdan on March 01, 2015, 07:58:56 AM
The dock on my DL1608 completely quit working. No audio, no power. I took the board apart to check the connectors inside and everything is tight. Unplugged and replugged and no change.

I still have connectivity via wifi so I can still use the mixer.

I'm thinking this could possibly be a firmware thing since both power and sync quit at the same time. I'm dying to push the reset button and see if everything comes back to life but I have one main concern. To my understanding, the reset button will reset the mixer back to the state it was in when it came from the factory. I would then need to update the board to the latest version of firmware (current master fader)

My question is, can I do this update over the network cable/wifi or does the iPad NEED to be docked? If it needs to be docked, I have a 50/50 chance of being completely screwed. I don't want to brick the board since it works find via wifi. I want the dock working but I can't afford this mixer to be out of service at all. Can anyone give me a straight answer on this ASAP?? At least confirm/explain what happens when you push the reset button and let me know if I can update over wifi after resetting.  The Dl32r has no dock..... so maybe?

 Thanks in advance

I think you can update by connecting an ethernet cable from the DL to your modem / router.

Check out the DL manual to be sure.

Cheers

Yes you can use the WiFi to push out the firmware update.  Just did that about a week ago.  My ipad wasn't connecting using the dock.  Previously when this happened, I just rebooted the ipad and everything hooked up.  This time, I think the addition of the firmware update may have contributed to it.  So I updated using Wifi, then restarted the mixer and rebooted the ipad one more time and everything hooked up this time.  Might just be another hiccup.  (Getting used to running into those during setup.)

Thank you.
That relieves me a lot. I just didn't want to take a perfectly good working mixer and render it completely useless.
I'm going to reset it now. Hopefully this resolves my dock issue. If not, at least it's a good excuse to finally upgrade to the lighting dock :)

Finished the force update. Still no dock connector but still have sync with wifi.

Now I'm hoping the problem is just with the dock's PCM and not something deeper inside. A simple upgrade to the lighting connector will hopefully fix resolve this.

Thanks for the quick response to my previous question.

Unless you have a broken or bent pin in the 30 pin connector or a defective cable set you're looking at the main board. Since you took it apart recheck all connections and connectors. Good luck. The lightning isn't going to help.

There are several resistors on the dock board. I'm wondering if one of them burnt up. If I had a schematic I'd be able to solve this.

Knock yourself out.  http://cacophony.aspinock.com/index.php?topic=464.0
A VOM meter will do just fine.

Thanks for that. Hopefully one of the shunts blew. If i find one with no continuity, I'll just jump it.

Exactly the info I was looking for. Thank you 100 times!

The reason why I suspect something blew is because it died when a dead iPad was plugged into it. This shouldn't have caused any damage but if something was going to give out, the extra current draw could have been the final nail in the coffin.

"ergent"?

I think that's short for extremely urgent. Obviously no spell checker in the title field.

..umm..just wondering why the thread title says "resolved" when it actually isn't..or have I missed something?

I think the part about being able to update without a docked iPad is the resolved bit.

I think taiping on a virtual keyboard, eyephone, ayepad etc, lends itself very well to spelling miss takes? The spell chequer is a big help two.  ;)

Will admit that my spelling has improved with spell checker.  I keep seeing the same mistakes and now I think about them.

Title corrected. The spelling error was merely a marketing scheme to draw more people to my thread.... or just me being dumb, one or the other lol  :o

..umm..just wondering why the thread title says "resolved" when it actually isn't..or have I missed something?

The original question was answered so I thought I'd write resolved for future searching for the same problem. However, it's always awesome when forum members offer additional assistance on the matter.

P.S. let's get back on topic!

No problem, I will for sure. Ran out of time today but it's on the chopping block for tomorrow.

Ok so R2 (28ohm to ground) is showing open circuit. All other values are reading on my VOM exactly as you describe. Any idea why there is a resistor to ground and not just another shunt?

If your measuring across the resistor then it's  defective. It's there as the signal description indicates an identification that Apple uses for accessories such as the DL. It's 28K ohms.

I'm checking through junk  circuit boards right now to see if I can find one. If I can ill solder it in. So basically it's working fine, just doesn't know there is anything attached.
Thanks for the quick reply.
I have a few old hard drives with the same style resistors all over it. If I can find one with the correct value I'll give it a try

Do you know what the tolerance would be on those resistors?

Dan, you might also ask why the resistor popped? It always worries me when a component dies, was it just it's time or did something external cause the failure. If you have a spare you'll find out when you fit it so good luck. BTW, a quick google reveals that 28k is only a preferred value in the E96 and E192 series with tolerances of 1% and ½% respectively.

The problem began when a dead battery iPad was plugged in, i would imagine drawing higher current through the resistor finishing it off. I just broke apart an apple iPhone charger and am looking for the resistor in that. I believe at this point upgrading the dock to the lightening connector will fix the problem, but the ham radio side of me is coming out now and I want to fix the problem the old fashion way.  8)

Thanks again for the info, between you guys and google, I'm learning lots!

Since when did they start making resistors in 1% and .5% values?  Last i recalled were 20%, 10% and 5%.  (Was always amazed how that level of accuracy resulted in electronics that worked.)  Think I might be a bit too old to go back to electronics classes.   (Vo-tech in 1969.  Great class and a lot of fun.  No integrated circuits, still using tubes and transistors.)

Metal film resistors are available down to 0.1% tolerance http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/through-hole-fixed-resistors/7550739/ (http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/through-hole-fixed-resistors/7550739/) these days, as you say, amazing levels of precision.

So I'm back up and running. I didn't have a 28k resistor so I used two in series. Plugged in the board and all is well again. The two resistors have a 5% tolerance and where they don't add up exactly to 28k ohms by colour code, the two I selected ended up being a perfect 28k on the VOM.

Thanks again for all the help, especially WK154.

Glad it was only the resistor, could have been the MB at $500.

Good piece of detective work for sure and help from WK. Nice to save a few dollars too. Glad you got it working again!  :thu: Being electronic repair declined, would it be possible to get that board only as a replacement part in 30 pin version, instead of spending $100 CDN on a lightning tray kit? Fortunately I don't need one, but for future reference, just in case. I know you can also get the lightning dock kit for $50.

I plan on getting the lightening kit soon. I figure it will be easier to sell the Dl1608 when I upgrade to the DL32R if it has a lightening plug.

Apple came out with the lightening plug right after the DL1608 hit the shelves. I'm guessing when Mackie made the switch to lightening connector, they probably had a stock pile of 30 pin boards that never got used.

I have no idea if this is true or not, just a guess.
