Title: First Big Show
Post by: Michael Welter on May 14, 2015, 03:20:49 PM
Wish me luck, everyone. This Saturday I have my first big show with my DL32R. Set up, and sound check, is tomorrow, then the show runs from 8 AM to 8 PM Saturday, in a 9000 seat arena. I've already built the mix, based on the what the organizer sent me, and used up all 32 channels. That makes me a little nervous. It'll be interesting to see how the wireless connectivity does in such a large room. Stay tuned.

Enjoy it, the upfront prep should hopefully make it an easy night :-)

Depending upon quantity of wireless transmitters onstage, you probably should have already gone through all of them and made sure there were no conflicts.  (Had a few problems last week with only 14 wireless mics.  No problems with the DL1608)  Good luck.

Wishing you the best from this end of the country.
Friday sound check should aid in finding any kinks.

I only have 4 wireless mics that I'll be using, and yes, I've used them all with the system. So I'm not too worried about that. Which means, of course, that I'll probably get the most trouble from them.

It'll be interesting to see how the wireless connectivity does in such a large room.

I have done two jobs in a larger stadium with my DL32R and the Apple Airport Express and had zero connectivity issues.

Have fun!!!!
Do report back :)

The setup, and sound check went flawlessly today. The DL32R sounds sweet. I wandered all over the arena doing the sound check, and my connection never wavered. So far, all is good. I'll post some pics after the show.

Looking forward to them.  Glad things are looking good.  One thing I did was to name my WiFi "NoInternetHere".  You could also hide your internet.  (Not a good last minute thing to do.)   I'm probably going to do that in the near future, but I'm testing for issues at home right now.

Michael,
I am glad you had a fun time!!!!!
I named my Wi-Fi connection "LOCKED"

One home system I've seen had the name virusliveshere.  (Or something to that effect.)  The one issue I have is when I need internet access with my phone, I need to turn the WiFi off.  The phone assumes if there is WiFi, there must be internet.   Fortunately, this doesn't happen too often.

Hey, everyone. I finally have time to report back from the show on Saturday. First of all, let me say that the DL32R performed flawlessly, and sounded wonderful. I use an Airport Extreme router with it, and I tried everything I could to see if I could lose the connection, but it held strong, even when I took my iPad up to the balcony area opposite the stage.

Now for the challenging parts. We set up on Friday, and the music group came in Friday evening for the sound check. Unfortunately, and much to my dismay, the convention center folks had not yet set the chairs in place. So I had to do the sound check without chairs. So really, the sound check was more to get monitor levels set. Here's a picture just before the sound check.

Here's a shot the next morning, after the chairs were set up:

You can see in the pictures, the A/V desk. I used the table on the right, while the video TD and the lighting techs used the table on the left.

The only issues I had, had nothing to do with the DL32R. My Bluetooth receiver only worked with two out of four devices that I tried with it. It worked fine with my android phone, and a Mac belonging to one of my techs. But it kept cutting in and out when I tried it with my PC or iPad. That was a minir issue. I also had trouble with my rechargeable batteries burning out far too soon. But they're old, so I think it's time to replace them.

Here's a funny story. During the sound check, I asked the drummer what he wanted in his monitor. He replied, "Music".  I guess he isn't used to working with a professional sound company.

and you call yourself a professional sound company with no mixer desk thingy

Only an iPad?   :)

At least with the iPad, nobody will walk up to us and say...
"do you know what all those knobs and slider things do?"

You're cracking me up, Dan. Actually, the musicians were quite impressed that I was able to set the monitor mix while standing next to them. It was pretty cool.

Ha ha, I had forgotten about being referred to as the knob twiddler on a few occasions by those of a humorous disposition! Now people just assume I am playing candy crush and occasionally 'ignorant', "don't you know there is a band playing?" Their face is a picture when you show them what you are doing.

Michael, it is great being able to provide a more personal service when doing monitor mixes.

I agree about setting monitor balances, standing next to the musician's monitor... it's wonderful!
Just the pure lack of having to set up tons of FOH gear is a blast.

I miss having a booth.  Now I usually work from a very small table.  And Colorado sunshine is a problem without a tent

I hear you Wynnd,
I sold my Allen & Heath analog console on eBay along with most of the outboard gear associated with it,
when it was all sold, I enough money to buy an Allen & Heath Qu24 with AR2412 stage box and a DL mixer. I had no cash layout for the change of gear.

When I do a concert, I use the Qu24 with faders which is very nice. However, most of my jobs are done with the Mackie DL32R.
And yes, sunshine is a problem with iPads and touch screens. I used to have an Easy-Up tent, but I sold that too and replaced it with a crank up umbrella for a patio table, it works great.

I use a 10x10 easy up tent on rare occasions. They're still a pain to set up, but the shade is pretty good. If you're on pavement, you can't lock the legs down and if it's really windy, over goes your shade. Gotta get some weights for the legs I think.

i did a gig outside with my pad, some birds dropped their load on my screen, that's probably lucky the barman said, an hour later I popped my compression driver,

Yeah really lucky,

I have an easy up, too, and love the shade. But after a bad experience with wind, I bought four metal buckets, filled them with concrete, and tie them to the four corners of the easy up. It works perfectly.

How much does each weigh? I've heard others worried about what happens when enough wind comes up to lift them weights and have one bash someone's head in :( . Another thing I've seen is those flexible 5 gallon drinking water jugs used, sometimes two per leg. Assuming you can get water on-site they don't load your transport down.
Kinda funny, when I was driving trucks one of our customers was a large tent company, they had 2000 lb weights we'd transport for them used to guy these huge tents down.

I haven't weighed them, but I would guess about 40 lbs each. So it would take a pretty fierce wind to lift them. So far, they've worked perfectly. But I like water bottle idea.
Title: Re: First Big Show
Post by: RoadRanger on May 26, 2015, 09:34:45 PM
Water is 8.3 lbs per gallon so 5 gallons is 41.5 lbs. The downside to filling on-site is the time involved.

Can't you just pound some stakes into the ground and not tote 200 lbs of water or concrete ?

When on pavement, I have just put a paver block on the leg

Stakes would work on dirt or grass. But I don't do outdoor shows often. And the buckets work for any venue, or even when I use the easy up in my back yard at a party.  8)

And any places where there is grass, there is usually a sprinkler system that can be damaged by stakes.  Always check before driving them in.  Weights work everywhere.

I just picked up a new Airport Express router. After all the discussion here about giving the network a name that would discourage people from pinging the network, I decided to name my network, "NSA Surveillance". That should do the trick.

Also helps to have a passphrase for security.  Easy to remember and longer and harder to crack.  NSA?  Funny.

just name it infected files, that should discourage people from trying to open it.

All went extremely well, no glitches or problems at all. Took me a little time to
set up the view screens more to my liking since I never did it when the
show format was emailed to me.
Very impressed with the DL32 and the owner of the place was thrilled not to have
Wires all over his floor.    Actually booked 2 more shown here for this summer.
5 hour ride back to town from the show, but I'm only a passenger in the van.

The lack of wires was one of the reasons I bought the DL1608.  Sold my 16 in 4 out 100' snake shortly afterwards.  Not that I minded putting it out, I was always concerned that someone might trip on it.

Finally made it back to Cleveland and discussing the performance on the way back it was
Unanimous that all were pleased with the system. A few new players this year as well as a few in ear additions.   Everyone was able to control their own monitor from stage which is great since all I have to deal with is FOH
I did realize that I really need to better understand how to set the output assigns since we did have a little issue in the beginning of sound check that took about 10 minutes to resolve. That made me realize that I don't know nearly as much as. Thought I knew about the DL 32.  Since my only learning was reading here, the online manual and the off line demo.  Next show is in two weeks but have 2 next week with the 1608

It must be hard to mix when the entire venue is upside down.  ;)

Not at all, I just flip the iPad over😀
I felt a bit upside down at this location for sure.  Especially when we found it was a  clothing optional
event.  Once things started, no cameras were allowed !  I was definitely a tad "distracted" and totally forgot I was supposed to occasionally change the lighing scenes.

Funny, on my screen the thumbnail is upside down but the pic opens the right side up.

Not to worry they all wore their magnetic boots, the rest was optional. :)
