DL32r best practice for Aux fed subs
« on: April 13, 2017, 09:26:21 PM »
I've assigned aux 11 & 12 (changed default routing to those outputs as well), sending kick, floor tom, keyboard, bass guitar, tracks, etc to those auxes.

Set aux 11 & 12 to Post Fader. Joined the two aux channels into a single stereo fader.

Faders for those channels and the two auxes set at "unity". Aux masters also.

Then assigned the main master fader and the aux 11/12 master to VCA 1.

Now to adjust the overall mix I have to use VCA 1 instead of the main fader.

I guess I thought that the subwoofer level would follow the mains without needing the VCA assignment.

Anything I'm doing seem wrong, or suggestions for improvement?

Thanks
-Rick

you have done everything correct, and if mix 11 & 12 is for subwoofers, then everything should be great,...
just raise and lower VCA1 and the mains and subs will be adjusted together, and the balance between them can still be adjusted individually with the 11-12 master and main L/R master.

May I suggest not using a stereo pair for subs, just one aux is suffucient.... you would need to daisy-chain the two subs, assuming you have two subs :)
I don't know what brand and model top cabinets you have, but you should also filter out low frequencies from going to the top cabinets, this can be accomplished by switches that may be on the rear of the speakers if they are of the powered variety, and you can also roll off, (filter out) low frequencies using the High Pass Filter on the MAINS L/R output in Master Fader. I suggest 24db/oct.

I address this very issue in this video...

Thanks dpdan for the quick response. I am in fact running two subs, all speakers are powered, and I have rolled off the lows to the tops.

Since I run mono all the time, I use L for subs and R for mains.

that works too,,,
just pan everything to the right and pan bassy stuff straight up.
There's usually more than one way to get the same results.   8)

BUT,,,
if you used the left for mains and right for subs at least the pan knobs would act like a volume control till you reach twelve noon,
obviously it works exactly the same way the way you do it, but to slowly add a channel to subs you turn the pan knob opposite how a volume control typically works :)

Now I'm rambling about a bunch of nothingness :)
