Stange goings on

I have a Mackie ProFX12 and I have a split lead from my mixer 2x large Mono jacks into a small stereo 3.5 jack going into the sound-card on my computer. The issue I have is this. If I remove the left channel jack from the mixer The right main meter is working properly but if I place the jack back into the left socket and remove the right channel jack it plays in stereo (both meters are working. I have tried new leads and I have also tried it on my new Mackie ProFX12 v2 and it does the same. Has anyone got any ideas please because I'm now beginning to lose the will to live.
