How hot does your DL1608 run?
« on: May 12, 2013, 09:44:48 PM »
Just got mine, it's been sitting here in my studio all day. It's uncomfortably warm right behind the gain pots, and the bottom is downright hot. Is that normal? If so, how does it handle a 100 degree festival day?

Mine gets reasonably warm, but nothing that I have been too worried about. It all been indoor use to date... and get punished by being sat on top of one of our EV bass bins :-)

The Mackie spec states 104 F. Not sure what "extended ambient temperature" implies. I personally would not push it passed 94 F in the shade. The unit should be in the shade. If you're going to operate in 100+ temps outside a fan would be in order. I raised the unit 3/4" off the case mounting base and left myself the option to add a fan in the base cooling the bottom of the unit. The voltage converters are mounted in the upper part by the Headphone area (analog section) and also produces a fair amount of heat. Since there are no cooling vents at the top of the unit and heat still rises I would expect the analog section to get the brunt of the heat. Hence the term "Hot Onyx Pres" .

I run mine all day in my office & it never heats up, but that's just processing one channel (I like some compression on my vocals for Skype & recording lesson videos).

It's been on for three hours, just felt it, only a little warm on the bottom.

I do have it on a table, with plenty of airflow.

Again, only running one channel & one effect, I have felt it get warm at shows when I used it heavily.

I saw this thread the other day and noticed the bottom was really hot after last nights gig. Big difference between the duo and the 6 piece band as far as heat goes.

Maybe if you're doing an outside show one of those laptop cooling pads would work?

OK, just so I'm not alone. Yep, had one of those USB laptop cooling gizmos in the closet. I'll keep it in the DL1608 case, run it off an iPhone charger.

I've used mine for hours 12+ at a time. It stays a bit cooler when an iPad is not docked.

Checked the dl for heat again. Saturdays gig was a wedding. Considerably cooler. Volume was a lot less. Has to be a factor.

Not on mine. It was sitting for quite a while before I got around to passing audio through it. It got hot. That's why I came here asking.

I would agree with this.  I did an outdoor gig at a local winery about a month ago with one iPad docked (to record) and the other remote.  The iPad in the dock got so hot, it went into thermal shutdown.

on a slightly different note... has anyone run sound outdoors with a 1608 in the hot sun but under shade? Can you see it well enough?
