Here are some of my thoughts on making the DL a reliable unit worthy of live gigs. The main problem centers around a rather shaky connection with the iPad via the dock connector. I propose to use it only as a charging port. A software change in the DL and MF to eliminate the problem code. Use the WiFi as the communications link since it appears to be robust. A unreliable wired comm link is of no value to anyone. With a 10/100 Ethernet connection to the DL there is plenty of bandwidth available to still provide more functionality even with 10 users. The WiFi if you're using the Airport Express (2012) will exceed the capacity of this Lan link. Airplay is a good example of sound over the WiFi in stereo and certainly can be send over Ethernet as many music servers do now. Most recordings are at 44.1k x 16 bits and that represents a single channel rate of 705.6k for PCM, for 16 channels that would be 11.3 Mbps. The lowest real world download from WiFi within 40 ft. is 28 Mbps, more than adequate for recording and 39% of the available WiFi bandwidth for one 5 GHz channel. The wired Ethernet link in real applications runs at 92 Mbps so has lots to spare, with no collision issues. Loss-less compression would drop that to 5.65 Mbps and lossy compression such as AAC would drop that to below 2 Mbps., certainly a large margin for this application. As to the loss of a wired connection, well get over it for now until a Android or PC tablet can run the DL.
