NAMM 2015
« on: December 21, 2014, 12:49:51 AM »
That event is scheduled for Jan 22-25th  a little over a month from now. What will be new in the MI business? It's a target date to a lot of businesses in the Music Industry for introducing new products and of course selling futures. What will Mackie bring to the table? DL16r? ;)

That's wishful thinking.  (We could get lucky!)

I can't see the point of rehousing the guts of the dl in to a new box, this is not a criticism but it seems from comments on here, the wish lists that exist elsewhere that  the product needs some serious improvements and killer features to set it apart from all the other up and coming soon to arrive never type products.

I think it's a nap that that every man and his dog will be pitching an 8 to 32 channel digi desk with ipad remote control at namm,

I am just not holding my breath, although I guess a few of you wish I was.

The only things left on my DL wishlist are multitrack recording and MIDI control so I can use a hardware fader bank. I don't expect to see either of those, and that's fine. I think they've done a great job of bringing it up to functionality.

My wish list would be limited to fixing sync and adding multichannel recording/playback). One of the topics I discussed with BenO. You can currently record and play back stereo (2 channels) so using AAC with about a 8 to one compression ratio over wav has the same amount of data to pass (2x8=16). If you think AAC is not good enough for this use, well the majority have no problem listening to it. Remember that this is not a recording studio application. Oh he said they would look into it. :)

I don't know about the DL hardware, but the iPad interface is certainly capable of handling multichannel uncompressed. There are several fully functioning DAWs.

One more thing for that far in the future list would be Metcom's effort on OSC or at least AudioBus compatibility. Yes the iPad can handle much higher data rates as could the DL but just to deal with the pundits here I made it simple to understand.

Fair enough. And yep, OSC would be lovely.

Nobody seems to be doing MIDI or OSC on the little mixers. It seems like such an obvious feature. "Don't like our interface? Here, roll your own."

Doesn't the X32 Rack qualify? It has both. Yes someone already rolled their own on Android.

As a little mixer? Not to me. When I fly to some gigs, my FOH isn't checked. It's not even in my carryon. It's in my personal, the thing you get to bring along with your overhead carryon. I also have university gigs where all I bring is a mixer to replace whatever godawful thing they had installed last century, and I can go to those with my FOH strapped on the back of my motorcycle.

Hence your purchase of the Touchmix. I queried them early on about some of their interfaces (USB,Network) and didn't like what I heard. The manual is also unlike them, full of errors. Bet their working on it though for that magic date Jan. 22 NAMM 2015.

That's what they say. Mine's on the shelf at the moment, waiting for the update to fix the pretty much completely nonfunctional WIFI. Ad-hoc only? Are you fucking kidding me?

The update is supposed to implement full networking functionality, including USB-ethernet dongles. We'll see. Then they can start working on everything else that they screwed up. I'm really disappointed. I get that they wanted to start fresh, but they completely ignored over a decade of the stuff other people figured out correctly. It's mostly fixable. I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling from them in the forum, though. "Your DAW can't handle our 32 bit files which all have the same name? Fix it yourself."

I hear you and they certainly didn't do it right. I may have to go to one of our AES meetings and ask Bob Lee what's going on. They were also about 3 yrs. behind. ::)
