thanks for all the responses... so it is best to run one xlr from left main outpout to the powered speakers (mono). should i pan the master and all channels to the left?

You don't have to - but if you want to have a bit of fun do that with all except those you want in the sub. Put those in the middle and just run your tops from the left output and your subs from the right output. That assumes that all your speakers have built-in crossovers for tops over subs operation.
