Imaginative techniques with a DL1608
« on: April 12, 2017, 01:08:04 PM »
Lots of you may be doing this all the time but I thought I'd mention it anyway:

I don't trust the recording feature of mf4 (ipad3) so I've been hooking up my MicroBR recorder to the h/p outputs for gig recordings. A more elegant way, if you have 2 auxes free, is to link, for instance, 5/6 and use the outputs from them as your recording feed.

Mf4 give the option of panning the channel send on a linked pair so it's possible to have a completely separate level/pan mix for recording than FOH. Obviously DSP and EQ are more limited (on/off) but it's still quite useful.

Hi Shufflebeat,

I have had solid performance recording directly to an Ipad-3, 64GB.
Am running latest DL1608 firmware.
Sometimes I record two auxes, sometimes a channel and an aux, sometimes just two channels.
Anybody ever tried using the DELAY effect as a post-fade recording send, obviously with no delay?

Thanks and good health,  Weogo

Hi, W.

I was one of the very lucky few who was blessed with both the 'white noise at full volume' issue and more recently intermittent white noise and dropout during recordings.

I've heard talk that this has been addressed in the recent update but the word from Mackie has been so vague and non-commital that it seems wiser to look for reliable workarounds. That update seemed more directed towards issues with the dl32r.

I would be happy to hear this has been addressed but I'll not take any chances just yet.

On the subject of routing the delay send to recording:

It's possible to route just about anything to an external recorder using the solo function and the headphone output but the technique you describe will be in mono, will it not?

Hi Shufflebeat,

Correct, using the Delay Bus as a post-fade send would be mono; and you could still use an Aux or Channel for the second recording channel.

You might want to try a few sessions of recording both on the Ipad and external recorder, and reviewing the Ipad recordings and determining whether they are acceptable or not.

I've been lucky, bought my DL1608 used four or five years ago and it has always worked fine.
