Hard Drive Recommendation for DL32R

I was originally trying to find an external hard drive with an internal power supply (to skip the wall wart), but then it occurred to me that I had read someone on here using thumb drives.  So, are the speeds necessary slow enough that I don't have to worry about hard disk performance?  If so, I could use a portable (powered by USB port).  That would be maximally tidy it seems.

Also... that velcro might sound like a great idea, but it feels like stuff will slide around without much provocation, how do people avoid this?  I was thinking about some sort of foam rubber "base" to increase friction between the unit and the accessories (hd and router), but thought while i was posting THIS, I could hit the oracle twice (so-to-speak)

I recently bought a USB3.0 SanDisk 128GB Ultra Fit (super small and low profile) for $29 off of fleaBay from a US seller. After starting to dump break music in .wav format to it and having it start turning itself on and off and get hot enough to burn you I Googled it and found out that you really can't dump large amounts of data to it on a USB3.0 port or it will overheat and do just all that (and possibly fry your USB port). On a USB 2.0 port it's fine and I'm sure would be fine on the DL32R also.

BTW avoid any flash drive on fleaBay that cost less than ~24 cents per gigabyte (especially from an Asian country) as they are fakes - I bought one for $13 from China that the vendor and Windows says is a 512GB but tests out (with "h2testw") as an actual 8GB . I did get a refund through fleaBay. I had previously bought a couple super low profile USB2.0 8GB drives from China for ~$2.50 and they were fine. I also have a Sandisk 32GB Ultra Fit I paid $10 for from a US seller that's fine.

So, for these purposes (i.e. short term usage without a ton of rewrites) there's no advantage to a traditional portable external you think?

I use a WD My Passport Ultra.  As long as I am more than a meter or so from the subwoofer(s), I have not found the need for a rubber base or velcro.
I always secure the drive (and the iPad Pro) directly to a laptop bag upon power down.

Also malware has been found on super cheap USB drives, hidden very well in firmware so you don't know it's there. Compromised USB devices can also emulate keyboard and mouse for hackers, so you have to be very careful and buy USB devices from reputable sources.

It's also a good idea to eject the hard drive before shutting down the DL, just to make sure nothing gets corrupted in the process. Do this even if you don't plan to disconnect the hard drive.

I've only used it once, but it worked well.  One thing I wasn't aware of until I bought it is that some USB 2.0 ports don't supply enough power for some USB 3.0 hard drives. The USB 2 ports on my desktop PC wouldn't power this hard drive, but thankfully, the DL32r did. 

I chose 1 TB because it's very inexpensive, but still has the capacity to hold many, many hours of 32 track, 24-bit recordings. 

I really wish Mackie could figure out a way to create individual mono files rather than a bunch of interleaved that later need to stitched and split.  It's a LOT of extra work to deal with the interleaved files.  Even better, wouldn't it be amazing if Mackie could not only make individual mono files, but have the file names be based on input that was recorded.

I'll be doing sound at a week long conference and I'll need to record to a laptop via Dante so that I can easily keep the recordings straight.  At least the interleaved files can be there as a backup.
