I'd like to use the DL32R as an interface in a recording studio with Pro Tools.
OK,1.) I have my studio monitors pluged in to the xlr outputs 13 L and 14 R of the mixer and no sound is coming out. I think there might be a problem with I/O configuration in Master Fader app or Pro Tools. Which section of the Master Fader app is for recording to DAW?
This is not a simple thing to answer briefly without knowing more about how things are connected. There is no "section" of Master Fader that is intended for a DAW setup, but you can indeed use the DL32R as an audio interface for any DAW including Pro Tools. Anyone use the DL32R in studio and could upload a picture of the I/O settings in Master Fader and DAW or have any suggestion how to make it work?
The DL32R is packed with features for connecting to lots of gear. In the top section of Master Fader is the area where we adjust the gain for the XLR inputs. This same area provides a switch that selects input A or B. If you are familiar with analog mixers, most of them have a MIC/LINE switch allowing you to choose between the XLR mic input or the line input. In the old days, we used the mic position to record mics into our multi-track recorder (Pro Tools) and then we would switch to the line inputs to play back those tracks from our multi-track recording machine.
Master Fader conveniently let's us choose what "audio source" we want for the "A" and "B" inputs. By default, all 32 "A" inputs have the XLR mic preamps assigned to them, all 32 "B" inputs have USB assigned to them. You will need to connect a USB cable between the DL32R's rear USB connection and a USB port on the computer with your Pro Tools. I have no idea what kind of computer you are using with Pro Tools but you will need to make sure that Pro Tools is using the DL32R as the audio "interface". Once it is, you can record mics and instruments from the DL32R to Pro Tools. When you want to play back audio from Pro Tools, you will need to use two USB input channels (for stereo) that you want to use as a return from Pro Tools. This will allow you to mix all your recorded tracks in Pro Tools and play them back through your monitors and headphones for musicians.
There is far too much time needed to get you going if you don't understand this much.
You can not expect to hear anything from your monitors if you have not properly routed Pro Tools to the DL32R. 2.) how do set up a talkback in DL32R to communicate with musicians in a studio ?
Similar situation, you need to choose the proper channel from the talkback channel in Master Fader and turn it up in the stereo "linked" MIX output that you are using for headphones for musicians. There is just no way for anyone to answer all these questions without specific communication via phone or Facetime. 3.) is it possible to make a cue for musicians straight from the mixer without a latency (not from Pro Tools) ?
Of course, any live mics connected to Master Fader's inputs can be monitored immediatley without latency from the computer. Most audio interfaces that are intended for studio recording have a dedicated software mixer for monitoring purposes... yours is Master Fader on the iPad.
