Apparently comb filtering was never an issue with the famed "wall of sound". It was basically a huge HiFi system (using top end HiFi components BTW). Each instrument had it's own array of speakers so the sound emanated from those speakers only. Each array was placed behind the relevant musician so the image perceived by the audience was pretty much perfect. It was hugely impractical and only lasted two or three years (and was constantly evolving) but all accounts suggest it was significantly better sounding than the systems commonly used around that time.
