It warns against disconnecting, power-cycling, etc., which I completely understand.

But.... what am I supposed to do?

shut it off and everything will be fine.

I have had firmware updates (progress bar on the iPad) stuck in the same place for more than ten minutes so I killed the power and turned it back on and everything was fine and updated perfectly.
