Shelf and Bell

Can anyone give me a quick over view of Shelf and Bell. I have searched for an explanation of the Internet and there is a little bit of information, but not much, so I was hoping someone in the know could enlighten me.

half a minute of messing with the choices on the "modern" EQ view and moving the gain up and down should give you your answer.
(short answer: "bell" puts a bump or notch where you have the frequency set, "shelf" changes
everything
on past that last EQ band.)
