Try to select the 5G signal of your express. Then try to select the highest channel possible to use by taking the channel select off of automatic and use the pull down channel select menu. There are a few different threads here that speak to the airport express and how to change it's settings.
Of course you'll need to verify that your i-device supports 5G wifi
